It is extremely important to understand how committing sins undermine our ability to trust Allah because reliance upon Allah has an immense impact on us – including giving us peace of mind and contentment of the soul.
Trusting Allah, or Tawakkal, is one of the finest deeds and acts of worship by which to draw ourselves closer to Allah. Imam Ibn Al- Qayyim said: “Half of the religion (of Islam) is reliance upon Allah and the other half is repentance.” Indeed Allah makes reliance upon Him a precondition of belief when He says: قَالَ رَجُلَانِ مِنَ الَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمَا ادْخُلُوا عَلَيْهِمُ الْبَابَ فَإِذَا دَخَلْتُمُوهُ فَإِنَّكُمْ غَالِبُونَ ۚ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَتَوَكَّلُوا إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ – 5:23 which means: “…And upon Allah rely, if you should be believers.” [Al- Maa’idah: 23] That’s why its very important to understand how our sins undermine our ability to trust Allah.
